Project 1 : Proposal (week 1 - 4)
For our first class, we were introduced to what this module is about and what to be expected in this module. As the projects are done in groups, we are required to split into group of 6. As some of the classmate are participating in the Japan trip, we are required to group with Japan group if you are joining the group. We are also required to find group members in different courses and semester. Here are my group members.

For the first project, we are required to come up with a proposal. The proposal should consist of a 200 word description defining and interpreting the theme relating to the culture of our study trip. We also needed ideas of what we intend to do that relate to the theme as well as the aspects of Japanese culture.
For our first group discussion, we start by listing aspects of Japanese culture that we are interested in knowing more about. After doing some research, we discussed our findings and ideas, we then compile them into a document.

Findings about Japanese culture
After discussing, we finalise the 3 topic we would like to do in-depth research on
- Tea culture
- Japanese traditional clothing
- Japanese cuisine - sushi making & history
We then compile our research into Google slides and share with Miss Anis and Mr. Asrizal for their feedbacks.
Proposal slide - 1st attempt
Mr. Asrizal gave us some feedback, he said that the sushi topic is interesting and ask us to do a more in-depth research on a specific angle on sushi. Based on the feedback we refined our proposal.
Proposal slide - 2nd attempt
After finalising our ideas, we split into 3 groups for each idea.
- Idea 1 : Malaysian crossover Japanese
- Idea 2 : Type of sushi - Packaging Design
- Idea 3 : Sushi Custom
We did a more in-depth research based on our idea and our specific topic. We also produce sketches and rationale for each idea. Below is our final version of our proposal
Final proposal slide
After our proposal presentation, Ms. Anis commented that instead of focusing on sushi custom and type of sushi, she suggest we combine idea 2 and 3 which will be more interesting.

INTERCULTURAL DESIGN : JAPAN TRIP REFLECTION
Data Collection after the study trip
We compile our findings into a slide. From the data collection, we can conclude that :
- Japanese element patterns is present in gift wrapping
- The souvenir gifts are wrapped in fabric or paper
- Bright colours are used in Japanese packaging
- Japanese packaging are polygon shaped
Data collection slide
We shared our data collected with Mr. Asrizal, he gave his feedback. He suggest that we can incorporate/ relate Malaysian culture into our Japanese packaging. He also said we don't have to fully focus on our main topic which is sushi. By incorporating Malaysia culture, it will make our project more interesting. Besides that, he suggested that we can come up with a brand that specialized in packaging inspired by Japanese packaging for Malaysian food since majority of the data collected are about Japanese packaging.
From the feedback, we discussed and conclude that we will incorporate Japanese patterns and elements of Japanese and sushi packaging into our final outcome. By using the data collected, we would like to create a packaging that incorporate Japanese packaging design elements such as patterns, different style of packaging, materials used and colours into Malaysia packaging. We decided to substitude sushi with Malaysia kuih which allow us to incorporate Malaysia culture with Japanese packaging.

Project 3 : Final Outcome (week 6 - 7)
From the data collected and sir's feedback, we had a discussion on how we can incorporate Malaysian culture into our packaging?. We decided to incorporate batik as we were inspired by our data collected which is Japanese patterns and Bunko leather. After the discussion, we decided to split into 3 groups to work on the outcome.
- Branding - brand logo, collateral and A1 poster design
1. Melanie
2. Shin Er - Patterns - Create a pattern for our packaging
1. Sherly
2. Wei Jun - Packaging design - Create a packaging that reflects Japanese packaging and Malaysia culture
1. Wai Fern
2. Winnie
For my part, I work on the packaging design overall look while Winnie work on the information and how the packaging look on the inside. Based on the data collected, I look for references and came up with three sketches.
Packaging design sketch #1
Packaging design sketch #2
Packaging design sketch #3
We had a discussion to share our progress. From our discussion, everyone prefer the 3rd sketch as it is more unique and shaped like a bento box. During the discussion, we also discussed the colour scheme, font and stroke size so our design look consistent overall.
Final outcome idea and references document
After the discussion, I start working on some mockup to figure out the size of the mockup. After a lot of try and error, this is our final outcome of the packaging.

Final Project
Experience
From this module, it was an interesting experience as I was given the chance to travel overseas for a study trip. It was an eye opening experience as I was able to see how different country's design reflects their culture.
Observations
From this module, I was given the chance to learn more about Japanese culture. I was able to learn about Japanese packaging. Its meaning and its different type of packaging. I was also able to observe how they incorporate Japanese culture and element into their packaging. From the study trip, I was able to apply my observation into the final outcome.
Findings
From the study trip, I was able to learn about Japanese culture. From the projects, I was able to learn about Japanese culture and also I was able to learn more in depth about Malaysia batik. Overall, through this module, I was given a chance to experience Japanese culture and their design. Japanese design is very interesting as they use a lot of bright colours which make their design interesting. Their way of using bright colours and bold font really catch my attention. From this module and the study trip, I was able to expend my view as a creative media student.
