Tokyo Trip : Reflection
For our study trip, we will be traveling to Tokyo, Japan to do our data collection. It was my first time traveling to Japan. I was excited as it was the winter season in Japan. For the first day, we landed quite late into the night in Tokyo, Japan. For the second day, we traveled around the Asakusa area. We visited Sensoji temple and I was able to experience Omikuji, a Japanese fortune slip which was an interesting experience.
My group did our data collection around the Sensoji temple as there were a lot of souvenir shops. We were able to view some Japanese packaging. Near the temple, there was a shop, Bunkoya Oozeki, they sell handmade handcrafts which are made out of pure white leather. It was interesting as the design are similar to Malaysia batik which helps with our data collection. We were able to see the colours and patterns used on the handcrafts.
After that, we went to Tokyo Skytree which was the tallest building in Japan. The view was nice and breathe taking.
After that, we visited the shops nearby and split into 2 groups to look for some information. We was able to view some packaging designs.
We visited a knife store to learn more about knife that were used in sushi making. The store lady was kind to us and explain to us how the knife is used in sushi making and how to use it properly.
For the third day, we visited TeamLab Planet Tokyo. It was an interesting and amazing experience as we got to experience the exhibition with our 5 senses. After visiting TeamLabs, my group decided to visit Diver city Plaza to do our data collection. We split into 2 groups as the mall was huge. It was a faster way to collect data as we would like to make use of the time. We were able to collect data on bento boxes and how Japanese packaging is packaged.
For the fourth day, we travel to Tokyo Midtown and visited 2 museums, 21-21 Design Sight and the Mori Art Museum. In 21-21 Design Sight, we were able to view the history and the process behind the famous arch in Paris,France, Arc de Triomphe. It was interesting and insightful experience. After that, we visited Mori Art Museum. It was interesting as we got to view different art installations by different Japanese artists. There are so many unique artworks which influenced me as there are so many things you can do in creative media. At the end of Mori Art Museum, there are many past event posters that visitors can view. The design of the poster amazed me as how they use the colour and font are interesting and eye-catching. It inspired me to create such eye-catching designs in the future.
For our data collection, we decided to travel to Ginza to find some data, however there was no data that is related to our topic. My group was not sure where we should go next so we discussed and decided to travel back to Asakusa and visit a nearby supermarket. In the supermarket, we were able to see how Japanese sushi is packaged in a local supermarket.
For the fifth day, I traveled with my friends as my group was done with our data collection. I visited Shibuya and Harajuku. I was able to experience a theme cafe which is famous in Japan. As there are so many types of themed cafes in Japan and they are famous among locals and tourists. I visited Pompompurin cafe with my friends. It was an eye opening experience as I was able to experience Japanese customer service which was really nice.
For the last day, I visited Akihabara to purchase some souvenirs. There were many anime billboards and anime stores. It was an eye opening experience. After that, I also visited Sensoji temple to get some more souvenirs.
Overall, it was an amazing experience as Japan have so many amazing streets and buildings. My group and I were able to enjoy ourselves while collecting data. Lastly, I was also able to view Japan’s graphic design which was an eye opening experience for me. It also inspired me to produce such eye-catching work in the future.
