Task 1 : HONOR Talent Global Design Awards 2023

In week 1, Ms. Anis give us a brief introduction regarding the module. For task 1, we are challenged to explore all forms of design skills - graphic, interface and animation. Using the design themes given for the HONOR Talents Global Design Awards 2023.

The themes are:

1. Cultural Prosperity · Celebration: A Totem of Renewing Festive Culture
Create with important traditional cultural elements of various countries, such as Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Christmas, Mother's Day, Day of the Dead, Halloween and Eid al-Fitr.

2. Renewal of life · Return: Contemplate human beings' relationship with all things.
With sustainable development as the starting point, your creations must incorporate the concepts of environmental protection, biodiversity, energy conservation and emissions reduction within the design details.

3. Genesis · The Future: Imagine the Innovative World of the Future
The world of the future will be constructed with the power of technology and art, using creativity and imagination.

For this task, we are required to create, produce and submit artwork compilation for one of the competition's category which are

• Wallpapers
• Themes
• Watches
• Open design

PROGRESS
Week 2 progress
For this task, we start with the ideation process. The theme I choose was Culture Prosperity. I start by doing some research on the festivals I would like to cover. I decided to work on Lunar New Year as it is a festival I celebrate. I compiled my research into a mind map.

For the categories, I have choose to work on watches and open design. I start sketching my ideas and looking for visual references and mood board.

Ideation

For the watch category, I came up with 2 ideas which includes a plate of food that are usually serve during Lunar New Year.

For the open design category, I came up with an idea where I would like to incorporate cultural elements such as patterns, colours, chinese animal zodiac, celebration food and decorations.

FEEDBACK FOR WEEK 2 PROGRESS:

- How food can bring everyone together? - Maybe can look at how food can bring family - Unity - how other country can get together - Why celebrate lunar new year?

- what represent lunar new years the most can put on the plate
Week 3 progress I decided to work on the watch design first and continue with the open design if I am able to complete the watch design before the deadline. Based on last week's feedback, I did some research on what food are commonly eaten around the world during Lunar New Year which are dumplings. I also did some research on the elements and plates design from countries such as China, Korea and Japan which are one of the few countries that celebrate Lunar New Year. After coming up with a few design, I explored some layout designs for the dumplings.

Week 4 progress
During week 4, I work on more plate designs as I was not satisfied with the current ideas. After coming up with new designs, I start working on the colour palette for the dumplings and plates. I also come up with design for the straps.

FEEDBACK FOR WEEK 4 PROGRESS:

- Dumpling - maybe some texture/ filling to give it some pop of colour/ contrast in colour - Dumpling can have fried texture - Can put the filling (such as prawns) and make the dumpling skin transparent - Dumpling current still visual the one with art line stand out - Explore/progress the art style - Background - add some details (crumbs) - Add a chopstick to break the composition - Can use napkin as time indicator or line

Week 5 progress

During week 5, I did some amendment based on last week's feedback. I added texture and details to the dumplings, details to the background and colour to the strap design. I also start planning on the animation for how the watch will work.

REFLECTION

Experience

This module was different from other modules as we get to choose the theme and medium that we would like to work with. This gave me the chance to explore different art styles and topic that I am not able to explore in other modules.

Observations

For the first task, I was stuck and not sure what theme I should work with. After some research, I was able to choose on the theme I would like to work with.  I was able to observe my classmates and learn about their projects. This task, allow me to learn from my peers and explore new theme and art style.

Findings

From the first task, I was able to learn new skills and improve my skills in using Adobe Illustrator. It was my first time illustrating food and I am happy with the final result.
