Final Compilation

INSTRUCTIONS :

Minor Project
For this module, we are required to form a group with different specializations from Creative Media to present an innovative concept that introduces unique solutions. My group consists of
  • Ng Wai Fern - Graphic Design
  • Kenisha Kweknoto - Graphic Design
  • Lum Qian Tong - Graphic Design
  • Chang Jia Yee - UI/UX
  • Yong Li Qing Vernice - UI/UX
  • Sea Hirayama - Animation
  • Qin Jia Hong - Entertainment Design

Task 1 : Propose an innovative project proposal as a group.
For task 1, we are required to conduct research on our target audience from a human-centered perspective to understand their needs to form insights into their actual problem. Empathy research with analysis reports on product or service functionality and effectiveness, technical innovations and challenges, aesthetics and design appreciation are required to support our new project proposal. The proposed solution must address the need that we have discovered from our research on the target audience.

For the first week, Mr. Mike gave a brief introduction regarding the module and what to expect in this module. He explained some project topics to us that are required to choose to work on as a group.

Fig 1.0 Project briefs

After choosing the project that we are interested in, my group had a discussion on the question that we would like to ask our client. At the same time, we begin the project by doing a research on STEAM education and competitors analysis.

We also had a chance to experience STEAM kits from our client, Mr. Damien.

For week 2, we are required to summarise our research. After consultation with Mr MIke, we are then required to do extra/ in depth research to understand our product from a different point of view. In week 2, we had a lecture on persona. Based on the lecture, our next course of action is to create 3 - 4 personas that represent our target market and come up with different sets of questions for each of the personas. The questions that are drafted will be used for an interview/ survey which is our next course of action.

Fig 5.2 Persona #3 - children

Fig 5.3 Persona #4 - children

For week 3, we consulted Mr MIke regarding our personas and questionnaires for our data collection. After the consultation, we start working on the survey forms, one for parents and one for children between the age of 7 to 18. We will be using Google forms as our survey platform. We target to hit 50 - 70 participants for both of our surveys. Our next course of action is to share the survey forms to collect data.

During week 4, we have shared our surveys last week however we have not reached our targeted goal which is 50 - 70 participants. We hope to reach this goal by the end of this week or early next week. We have consulted Mr MIke regarding our survey forms. He suggested we analyse the data we have on hand currently first. If our survey does not provide us enough data, we might need to conduct an interview to collect more data. Our next course of action is to collect more

For week 5, we gather and analyse the data from the surveys. After completing the data analysis, we came up with our top 5 ideas which is the next step that was instructed by Mr Mike. We had a group discussion to discuss our ideas and categories them accordingly. After completing the top 5 ideas, we then discuss on the insight statement, problem statement and How might we questions which are our next course to action.

During week 6 to 8, we work on the insight statement, how might we, problem statement and user journey map.

During week 7 to 8, we spent time discussing our art direction. After discussing the challenges, we came up with some options for our solutions. We came up with some logo design, character design, website, and application designs. For this task, we split the task according to our specialization which are logo design for Graphic Design, character design for Entertainment Design and Animation, and website and application design for UI/UX. We also start preparing the presentation slides which is our next course of action after completing drafting some design options.

During week 8, we continue working on our presentation slide content. Besides that, we also did some amendments to the logo design and character design based on the discussion among the group members. During the discussion, we also planned our rehearsal as our next course to action is proposing our ideas to the client.

For week 9, we presented our idea to the client. After the presentation, we got some feedback from the client. Based on the feedback, we had a discussion on how we can improve and how we can solve the issue that was brought up by the client. We decided to rework on the art direction as the client would like us to cater more to teenagers than children. Our next course to action is to rework on our initial draft for logo and art direction.

Task 2 : Devise and produce design management protocols relevant with industry practice.

For week 10, we work on improving our art direction based on the feedback we have received. We had a discussion on how we can rework on our art direction to match the current target audience. During this week, Mr Mike gave us some pointers on how we can see if our art direction works. He suggested we work on our key visuals in class and discuss the element to be used in our art direction. Our next course of action is to complete our logo design, key visuals and come up with the list of collaterals that we will be producing.

For week 11, we discuss the collaterals and split parts for the collaterals to make sure our progress runs smoothly. For this week, Graphic design team start working on the social media content, Entertainment design team work on the background design for the storyline, Animation team work on the character design and UI/UX team work on the website and application design. That is our next course to action for this week.

Task 3 : Produce the final presentation of the proposed solution to a panel of reviewers
For week 15, we finalise our designs and start to mock up our designs. Besides that, we also start working on our final presentation slide. We also had a discussion and split our parts for the final presentation slide to make sure our progress run smoothly. Lastly, we had our final presentation with the client at the end of week 15.

REFLECTION

Experience
This module was different from other modules as we get to work with a client in creating a brand identity and marketing strategy from scratch. The module is a bit difficult in the beginning as our art direction is not what the client have in mind however after a lot of discussion sessions, we are able to come up with a solution. My overall experience as a group leader and a group member was great as my groupmates are corporative and helpful when it comes to problem-solving and ideation. This module allow me to experience and learn a bit about the industry.

Observations
Throughout the module, I was able to learn that art direction and key visuals are important to ensure the collaterals that are produced are consistent in style and feel. Besides that, the initial stages, research, how might we, problem statement and user journey map are helpful in giving us an idea of the problem that we need to solve. It helps us to come up with ideas and what type of collaterals do we need to design. Overall, every stage is important as it direct us to the right direction.

Findings
Through this module, I was able to learn from my groupmates. I was able to learn from the feedback given by Mr. Mike and the clients which help me in improving my work. By working with clients, I was able to learn how the industry works and I am able to prepare myself to make decisions that are able to solve design problems. Besides that, I was able to learn about STEAM, STEAM kits and its competitors.
