Week 1

WHAT is research?

• the systematic and creative investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. 
• increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications.  
• research is the pursuit of knowledge. 

Week 2

Problem statement

• A problem statement is a concise description of an issue to be addressed or a condition to be improved upon. 
• It identifies the gap between the current (problem) state and desired (goal) state of a process or product. 
• A problem statement paves the way for the reader to understand the research problem.

Problem question

• A research question is an answerable inquiry into a specific concern or issue. It is the initial step in a research project. 
• A research question is the ground of the foundation of your research. It is what everything in a research project is built on. Without a question, you can't have a research and discussion.

Research objective

• Research objectives may be linked with a hypothesis or used as a statement of purpose in a study that does not have a hypothesis.
• A statement of research objectives can serve to guide the activities of research. Consider the following examples.

Week 2

For my research topic, it was very general. For my research question, I have to narrow down to one area. I have to focus on the communication of graphic illustration and not about the job of a graphic illustrator. Example, How does graphic illustration communicate in advertisement and do they communicate well or not in advertisements. Citation is needed for my rationale and I need to rework my citation for my references. I have to work on my research problem and problem statement before next class. I was advice to read notes for week 1 and 2. Lastly, I have to identify what does my topic fall under as ( Design Culture or Design for Future Making or Social Design )

Week 3

For my research topic instead of Graphic illustration as a communication in advertisements, Dr. Jinchi suggested the topic as Graphic illustration in advertisements. For problem statement, Dr. Jinchi advice to reword my first paragraph and add on the definition of advertising .For the last paragraph for the problem statement, Dr. Jinchi advice to reword the last sentence to study on and add on the specific different categories of graphic illustration used in advertising ( billboard, magazine, newspaper and print ads). For research questions, What are graphic illustrations in communication? and What are illustrations in advertising? are not much of a research question. Instead it being a question, Dr. Jinchi advised to answer them and add on as a introduction to Graphic Illustration as a communication tools in advertising.
